Nineteen Mile Brook trail started off with about 5 inches of fresh powder. One set of tracks, and many exposed rocks. Started with spikes. At the junction with the Carter Dome trail, the tracks headed toward the hut, so our trail breaking began. The very light 6-8” of powder hid the rocks, which made the footing difficult since the snow was so light. Lots of tripping on rocks and roots. At Zeta Pass we switched to snowshoes. The snow was a foot deep heading up to Carter Dome with 2-3 foot drifts. So thankful for hiking buddies Marilyn and Barry who broke out the trail to Carter Dome. There is now a great snowshoe trench to the summit. When we returned to Zeta Pass, we were disappointed there were no tracks heading up to South Carter, which meant no one had started the loop from Imp. At the South Carter summit, we were exhausted from trail breaking and tripping and falling on the rocks with snowshoes, we decided to head back the way we came. It was a long day, a bit disappointing to not make it to Middle, but happy with 2 out of 3 on a frigid day with tedious snow conditions. Happy to get back to the cars safely. More snow is needed to improve these conditions. |
