A great track was laid by the snowshoers over the weekend which froze into quite a solid base. Looks like great skiing conditions. There was a fresh inch of fluff on top today and I got to enjoy seeing only animal tracks. I bare-booted following both of the common shortcuts until the steep herd path/unofficial trail that were not supposed to name. I put microspikes on but longer crampons might be better for some folks. I used my upper body strength to dig the poles in for traction on this steep section. On the way down there was some controlled sliding. Up on the ridge there were knee-deep drifts but I didn’t put my snowshoes on at all today, I had gaiters on so just plowed through for the last few hundred feet. I missed the summit and went past it before realizing I was going downhill because it’s such a flat summit and with the drifts really not obvious. All in all it was a great day, and warmer than expected with no wind. It took me about 6 hours and I jogged quite a bit on the way out. I was glad to get these before more snow, but I’m happy to report there is a solid base under there now. |
