Comments
Comments: Gorgeous day with almost no wind and great views. The walk from the 302 parking lot to Zealand road might have been easier with snowshoes - about 5-6inches of snow in some places, but somewhat packed down. We used microspikes the whole way today. The road walk was fine with spikes - there is a packed trail starting and the snow is only a couple inches. A couple ice spots on the trail that could be avoided without spikes. Halfway up the trail, the snow was about 3-4 inches of loose powder in many spots. Fine with spikes, only 1-2 ice sightings under loose powder. Walking around the summit would have been better with snowshoes - drifts of about 8 inches, again loose powder at this point. There are little packed trails up there to some viewpoints, so the drifts can be avoided.
