Comments
Comments: Happy to report I was able to solo traverse the Sleepers. Pine Bend and Mt. Tri trail were well broken out to Middle but we still opted for snowshoes. My partner turned around and I went on to South, which was beautiful but treacherous going down the steep part as expected. Spikes or snowshoes will get scraped up here, but there’s not much ice under the snow, just rock slabs. Much recent moose traffic to guide the way on the Sleepers, few blazes, so it’s a challenge to find the route sometimes. I was sinking about 8” on average throughout. I was hoping for easy going once I got to Rollins, but drifting had erased the tracks here, so I got no rest. The breaking was easier in the soft snow descending Square Ledge trail, which was quite fun actually. Then I was happy to find a solid packed trail from the cutoff out the last few miles, and ski groomer tracks too. It took me 9 hours total, about what I expected. It takes me 6 in the summer.
