 | Comments: |
From vehicle, we crossed the orange gate and followed logging road for 1 mile. We turned left onto another logging road that we followed 0.6 mi, easily crossing a brook. Turned left onto another logging road that we followed for 1 mile to a T-jct. From here, we bw NNW aiming for the sag between Bald and a SW bump. Then bw NNE to a point NW of Bald at approx 2050'. We then turned SE and started the ascent. On the ascent we hit 3 relatively narrow spruce bands with hidden blowdowns that could present a significant challenge in deep snow. We then reached the summit and the register. The summit area is almost entirely ringed by big blowdowns.
Breaking effort - minimal - sinking 2-4" on a supportive base.
Grades - mostly easy, some moderate
Tree density - wide open woods, except for the 3 spruce bands on the final ascent.
We avoided any attempt to ascend via the mountain's W side, opting instead for an approach from the NW. We failed to reach the summit last year because we started the ascent from the West eventually hitting impassable ledges. |
