Crusty snow was the primary surface, we used microspikes all the way to Blueberry Ledge where I opted to change into my K-10’s because I wasn’t getting any purchase with my microspikes on the icy ledge, and if you have them with you, why not use them… went up the ledge with ease after the change. My hiking partner remained in his microspikes and did just fine but later admitted he wished he’d had the pair I had packed for him that he left in the car :). Total personal preference of course - saw several others that had done it in just micros as well. I kept my K-10s on the rest of the day and they were helpful again on the final ascent and descent to Passaconway as some of the steeper sections now have built up blue ice on them. Beautiful day, the trees shielded us from otherwise high and cold winds. Views from all view spots were worth the hike, including breaking out the view trail off Passaconway from the Walden Trail. Great day out. |
