I parked my Honda Accord in the little lot to the right (near where you'd drive into the campground) when you exit the highway. There wasn't much snow, but enough to make it grind its wheels at me and act like we would get stuck. It was a little touch and go (this is the car that refused to go up Ravine Lodge Road this morning - I was planning on Moosilauke) |

I was hoping to get away with just Hillsounds but the surface is 2-3 inches of very loosely packed powder on thick ice (from Monday's ice/rain debacle). So they didn't have much purchase in the ice and I found I was having to really work on the uphills. Snowshoes were the right choice for today and everyone I saw out on the mountain was in agreement. (if only my snowshoes didn't finally give up the ghost on the evil part of Kinsman Ridge Trail). Definite Type III fun. Also, I learned that one can't necessarily cross a "snowfield" to get onto Lonesome Lake. At least the part I tried to cross was very very thick mud that REALLY wanted to eat my boot :D |
