Most were solidly bridged. Two were open enough to require some route finding and one had enough snow covering the rocks to make it hard to know whether you would be stepping on rocks or water. |

4 of us did a ZBonds traverse from Zeland to Lincoln Woods. We picked up a 5th at Zealand summit who stayed with us the rest of the day. 3 of us barebooted Zealand Rd & Zealand Trail to the hut but I chose spikes. It is well packed but not smooth. No one had been past the hut since the last snow so we all put on snowshoes for the rest of the day until we got to Lincoln Woods trail. Near the hut we were only breaking 1" of new snow but in other areas there was 4 or 5". The only deeply drifted areas were coming off Guyot and coming off Bondcliff. "Hillary Step" would have been very difficult but the bypass was relatively easy. Guyot & Bondcliff were the only areas without snow and we would have been better off in spikes there but wer didn't want to bother swapping for the short section. Bondcliff is mostly ice but it never felt sketchy. Spikes had good traction and rocks provide plenty of foot holds. We chose spikes for Lincoln Woods trail also since there had been a lot of foot traffic. Grid #2 finished! |
