Comments
Comments: First one on trail today at 6:30am. Very minimal snow cover first few miles. Snow was soft but so shallow you wouldn’t posthole, just leave occasional divots. Trail was choppy but so shallow snowshoes made no sense (and you’d wreck them on the open water crossings). I barebooted with ease just past the final stream and then put on my MSR Lightning’s, which were the ideal footwear up the steeps and across the ridge to middle. Five or six very short icy spots at the steepest sections which had been butt-slid but was able to walk right up them. On way back down summit cone of North I did have one violent accidental bum touch. Once back down to the lower steeps I switched to Hillsound Pro’s and had no problems staying upright. I think these or equivalent (K10’s) are the best choice for descent right now. Snowshoe’s were providing cheap unwanted thrills and micro spikes are a bit lacking. Saw a dozen hikers headed up north-half (the smart ones) were televating up in snowshoes, the others were working overtime in their spikes up the soft, steep slopes. Just before the climb to middle a moose had had a postholing poop party and bedded down 20 feet off the trail very recently. Bring your snowshoes and your sharpest thingies for this one!
