Microspikes the whole way. Early in the day it was solid with a thin crunchy layer from overnight no need for snowshoes. Just after the first cliff overlook (~1 mile) though there was a bit more new snow and it quickly became soft and choppy. It wasn’t unreasonable in spikes but wouldn’t have regretted switching to snowshoes here but didn’t take them this time. Most people I saw ascending also didn’t wear snowshoes but on my way down passed a few groups going up w snowshoes and a skinner which will immensely help smooth the trail.
TLDR start with spikes, carry the snowshoes for later. |
