ALl beaten out with a solid base. I snowshoed all day, for purposes of traction on the way up and steering my endless butt slides on the way down. Saw a group of 7 or so all decked out in crampons and ice axes (useful if you want to try the chimney, which is currently covered with soft snow and ice; we broke out the Bypass; others had broken out the Bypass of the Bypass), and many others in spikes. Mountaineering snowshoes have the best combo of traction and flotation for ascending with minimal energy loss, IMHO. It looks like people have gone over Osceola towards Tripoli Road, and also from Greeley Ponds (at least) towards the Kanc, so if you're thinking of that loop, it may well be broken out the whole way. |
