Date of Hike: Saturday, January 17, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: All good at Sabbaday Brook Trail Head.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All crossings had frozen portions that were easy to navigate or easy to rock hop, although the ice did crunch in a few spots.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Not an insignificant number of blowdowns past mile 3 or so, some were time consuming to navigate with snowshoes and but also fluffy snow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Enjoyable for the first few miles but became challenging for my pup after mile 3, when we were fully breaking trail on untouched snow.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: On the old logging road portion of the trail, somewhere between mile 2-3, someone found an old chain that is almost certainly a relic of the logging days. They've hung it on a small tree on the right side of the trail. It's very interesting.

Comments
Comments: The trail had not been broken out at all past mile 3 or so. The snow has become fairly deep and the trail is extremely difficult to follow with no yellow blazes apparent after passing the Sandwich Range Wilderness sign. At mile 3, all maps indicate that Sabbaday Brook should remain on the left of the trail with no water crossings, but I found that to be impossible. The 30th edition of the AMC Guide mentions some washouts from the 2011 storm and this is probably an example. There is no option but to cross the brook and eventually cross back over in another 1/4 mile or so. I really struggled to follow the trail at this point, despite having the route preloaded onto my Garmin 67i. Apologies to anyone following my tracks, I lost the trail many times and eventually turned around, as I had burned significant time trying to locate the trail in various locations.
