A few stream crossings have open water over a foot deep under the snow. My big snowshoes no doubt saved me from wet feet on one snowbridge which broke. |

I broke out the old Bemis fire tower trail. Snow was almost knee-deep consistently the whole way, but in a lot of places above 2,900 feet I was sinking to my waist or chest. It’s so fluffy you can plow right through it. I wore my tail extensions to make my snowshoes 32” which helped a lot. The old trail is surprisingly still passable, I did lose it several times but was able to pick it up again with my recorded gps track from 2 years ago (when I followed it up in the summer). Not an easy day, it took me 6:15 to reach the canister, and only 2:15 to return in my tracks, 8.5 hours for 8 miles or so. |
