Looked like one person (thank you Micah Seidel!) had gone before me to break trail to South Peak since the storm and there was still a lot of unconsolidated powder. I broke trail to the North summit. Got off trail going to North a couple times. Had to use my internal GPS to follow the trail as blazes weren't visible and I could guess well enough so I could keep my cold hands in my mittens. Did sink in to my hip a couple times in the drifts and deep snow approaching summit of North Peak. Coming back down CRT from South Peak I couldn't even tell I had gone up! Powder was still very unconsolidated but certainly better than if I had to break trail the whole way. Will take a few more people to really pack it down. The stillness of winter on the trail in the woods is wonderful! |
