Terrific morning. About 0F to start, ended around 8F? The bar was open in the upper tram station though the tram is not running/closed. LOTS of people at the caf/bar. Nice to have a warm bathroom to use. Trail pretty solidly packed by snowshoes but it was occasionally mega-drifted by skier use (not just in the glades). Upper section above the outlook, as you are climbing the summit cone, I could not find trail, so, I followed the skier tracks to the ski trail, followed the rightmost (skier's right) trail to the tram building. From there, I went up behind the upper lift to the tower. I didn't climb tower because I didn't want to take off my snowshoes yet again. I tried to find if anyone actually broke out the rim trail and the path to the tower but I couldn't find any evidence, so, when descending, I went the way I came up. Snowshoes were the way to go. On my way down, there were a couple guys postholing/microspiking the trail and digging it up pretty well; one must have stepped off-trail and was completely turtled/trying to get out of the DEEP snow like it was quick sand. C'MON folks!!! The snow is deep!!! Don't bust up the trail!!!! Use the dang snowshoes!!!! |
