Out and back to Zealand on this frigid, bluebird sky day.
Zealand Road to Zealand hut was well tracked out. We put snowshoes on at the hut and happily followed the tracks of 2 other hikers who were breaking trail ahead of us up to Zeacliff and had perfect views in every direction. The tracks continued for a bit past Zeacliff but we soon ran into the 2 hikers who had left them, as they decided to turn back before reaching the summit due to exhausting terrain: shoulder deep snow drifts, spruce traps, and difficult navigation. The last mile or so up to the summit was slow going deep snow trail breaking, but our group of 5 made it to Zealand summit around 2pm.
*There were no tracks from Twinway to Guyot at the time we were on the ridge. |
