Comments
Comments: Whitehouse Trail was packed, easy to walk. Spikes were totally sufficient. The bike path/snowmobile trail was wide and easy to navigate but somewhat loose, like walking in sand but overall good. Liberty Spring Trail was well packed, micro spikes are sufficient for 99% of the trail. Poles are a must, as there are some pretty steep section where your footing might be unstable. Snowshoes not really required, you can get away with no snowshoes all the way up to the summit of Liberty. If you were really hell-bent on using snowshoes, you could justify them on the col between Liberty and Flume but honestly they’re not necessary. The bigger issue on the col is low hanging snow covered branches and blowdowns. Descending from Liberty is the worst section with branches that are so low, they're hard to duck under without knocking snow off. There's one blowdown that forces you to climb under it, the vegetation on either side of the trail is too dense to bypass. Coming back down LST, I stepped off the trail while chatting with a few hikers going up and immediately was up to my thigh in snow, so keep that in mind if you venture off the trail.
