Having had a very late start (1230) and never having been in Ammonoosuc before I didn't know what to expect but conditions were starkly different than the previous day, trail had fresh powder from a few inches at the beginning to more than 12" by Alpine zone, I had a hard turnaround time of 3pm and I stuck with it as conditions were deteriorating rapidly, low visibility and fairly chilly and gusty made my goal to the Hut impossible as I didn't want to hike under headlamp in unfamiliar terrain, descent back was even more difficult than breaking the trail up to Alpine zone Solo, but I managed without incident, despite the difficulty it was great to be out there and get a healthy dose of Mother Nature, will have to go back under favorable conditions, only saw a few folks at the start of the hike puttering around, they had no intention of hiking very much higher |
