Met a guy in the parking that had been first to break out the trail. When I asked how the conditions were, he said horrible. Being that there were at least 6 others ahead of us, we figured it wouldn't be so bad. We certainly had our challenges.
Snowshoes are needed as the track is soft and loose and fills in quick up near the summit. There was a lot of slipping backwards with the snowshoes. Be aware of skiers coming down thru the glades. After you break treeline, the track wanders from the trail. And often goes off and dead ends. Be cautious of spruce traps. One guy we spoke to said he fell in up to his neck in one. We followed the tracks the best we could but they were easy to lose in the exposed areas, especially when we were descending. Visibility was poor. Its was cloudy, but everything was white, the sky, the landscape, which didn't help. There was just enough wind to cover your tracks. Descending, our tracks had been erased and we had to use our GPS bread crumbs to figure out where to go. Someone could easily get off track and get into trouble in this area. Coming down was challenging with the loose powder. The snowshoes were slipping and sliding. I took a few volunteer butt slides on the steeps. A very interesting day to say the least. |
