A FINE day in the forest was had. Yes, this was one contiguous hike. Drag strip conditions on Jackson to summit from trailhead. There is a TON of snow on the trees, so any warmup is going to be the Willey kids throwing snow grenades with vigor! Upon leaving the summit cone of Jackson and entering the woods towards Piece, we where greeted with FEET, FEET of snow, drifts 5-6'+. We went about 100 yards before we all said forget it. We've done this way too many times to worry about busting that out. Navigation was extremely challenging, even with being on this leg probably 50+ times combined. So we did what any normal person does, we went down, played chicken with Conway Scenic while crossing the tracks, and went up to Mt. Willard trail. Also a drag strip. Surprisingly almost everyone was in snowshoes on Jackson, and those that weren't were carrying them (Why not use the tool you're carrying to make your life easier?). Mixed bag, mostly touron central on Willard. Several downhill hikers where taught to yield to uphill by our steamrolling quintet. A good way to get 3k gain while climbing to a 2895' ledge. |
