We were pleasantly surprised to see that a skier had broken out a good part of the trail. We didn't have to start trail-breaking until we were about a mile from height of land. The snow was quite deep in spots, and every once in a while one of our feet would sink 12" below our other foot (yes, we were on snowshoes.) Between that and the occasional sliding off the track into the deep snow on the side, our hips and ankles had quite a workout. Poles weren't much help because the snow to the sides of the track was so deep. The track is quite narrow but we all managed not to trip ourselves.
We did our best to to create a level surface but beware of those deep snowshoe-size potholes.
Like everywhere else, the snow is still very fluffy and led to some back sliding in spots, even with mountaineering snowshoes. A beautiful trail on a glorious blue sky day in the Whites! |
