Comments
Comments: Trail had a couple inches new snow down low, increasing to about 4-5" up high with some drifting. I started mid-morning and it looked like there had been maybe one person on trail before me with boots/spikes. I thought the trail would have been more travelled, but guess everyone went skiing instead! I put SS on at the TH and kept them on entire time to try to smooth things out, and was very glad to have them. Snow is soft over a firmer base down low, but up high it's still pretty loose and unconsolidated. There were tracks from skiers using the trail in the middle third section (above the view). It made for a bit of an inconsistent surface through that section with firmer areas where they turned and softer areas where they pushed the snow off to the side. Along the ridge, snow was soft and loose, with some drifting. No evidence of recent traffic on the Sosman trail over to the top of the ski area, and no evidence of traffic going to the R at the summit loop. I went left as did the booter before me. The backside of the (L) loop was very drifty and the wind was already filling in my tracks on the way back down. Summit was sunny with great views, but cold and windy so didn't stay too long. As I was descending there was one booter w/ spikes coming up churning up the trail a bit, but then met two more coming up in SS after that so hopefully they will be able to smooth things out again. Snowshoes recc esp. as temps warm and things soften up.
