walked down the road for a hundred yards or so from the pull out then picked a place to head into the woods and up the valley to the huntington/south huntington col. up to the col i found mostly scrappy woods with some nice open sections and numerous drainages. snow the whole way from a couple inches low to a couple feet or more in isolated areas higher up. today it was quite firm and only occasionally did i punch through. once on the ridge the woods were nice and mostly open to both peaks with continued variation in snow depth from a thin layer to a couple feet. the acknowledged high points on both summits were quite clear.
i wore microspikes for most of the day to get traction on the crusty snow base. with the amount of low growth and constant variation in depth snowshoes would have only been a frustration.
this is another one of those hikes i have looked at for a while and finally got around to attempting. original plan was to head up from hancock notch, but decided to try this route instead. generally ok woods, but no walk in the park. would have liked to have spent more time exploring the summits, but with the new snow on the trees i was drenched and cold so headed down pretty quickly. great to be out. |
