The climb to Pierce is the usual densely packed snow, perfect for spikes. At tree line, there were some drifts that obscured the trail. I switched to snowshoes, and with a random hiker, found the trail past the drifts. That portion of the trail was pretty packed down by the end of the day. The trail over to Ike was a combo of drifts, strong winds, and brief respites in the trees. Definitely snowshoes until the final climb up Ike, where I would have been more comfortable in some aggressive traction... my snowshoes were getting caught and moved by the wind! While the trail was generally easy to follow, there were a few confusing spots where tracks went in multiple directions. One set led me into my first spruce trap (thankfully a small one). When in doubt, stay to the left.
At the summit of Pierce, the clouds lifted, and the views were spectacular :). |
