 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of parking at the trailhead off route 16 for several snowmobile trailers. It wasn’t clear how deep it was so be careful not to drive onto the groomed trail, it may be deep. |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Light Traction, Skis |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
I was able to walk across Swift Diamond River but I wouldn’t recommend it with warm weather coming. I could hear the flow underneath. Using the bridge would’ve added 3 miles round trip, so I took a chance. |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
No issues. Well signed trail system for snowmobiles. |
|
 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Not a good idea with all the snowmobiles. Also of note, I heard lots of coyotes and saw one. |

First I was going to try Coarser Brook rd (corridor 18), you can only drive in a half mile or so, but I wasn’t sure about parking, plus there is 800 feet of gain on this route, so I went over to New Greenough Pond Rd instead, which only has a 200’ climb and a large trailhead to park at. Still it is about 15 miles one way to West Tucker, so I loaded my sled with gear and set off at sunset, bare-booted 6.5 miles by headlamp until reaching the river, where I snowshoed across and set up my hammock for the night. The next morning I walked 8 miles or so to the pond rd and put my snowshoes on for breaking the 1 mile up the trail and then a short but tough bushwhack to the canister. I made it there by 11:00 am. On the way down the snow was getting sticky, so I abandoned my dreams of getting the Crystals, and bare booted all the way back out, only using snowshoes for the river crossing. There was a lot of snowmobile traffic for mid week I thought, everyone must be getting it in before the rain comes. This trip was roughly 30 miles, 1500’ of gain, and 13 hours moving time, or 24 hours total. |
