The warm temps and warm rain Saturday night have weakened the snow pack base, including the monorail base [not monorail]. I believe this was the case at all elevations, based on warm rain at the summit of Mt. Washington. Hiking with boots or spikes is disasterous, apparent by watching one hiker thrashing upward. Hiking with snowshoes still results in numerous postholes to either side of the fragile monorail [not monorail]. The conditions are exhausting, and not fun. We turned back at Bunnell Notch. One hiker summitted and reported conditions were a bit better above 3,000’. Recommend waiting for hard freezing nights, and beware of the hazards left behind during the warm days. |
