Valley Way- We used spikes for about the first mile on Valley Way then switched to snowshoes. The posthole were not bad in the morning, but on our way out, it became a mess from bare booters especially the area for about 1 1/2 miles below the hut. It was tedious to walk on. We used snowshoes and it was tough to stay up on the developing monorail with all those postholes. We used snowshoes for most of Valley Way except for the last mile to the parking area. There is lots of slushy moving water on parts of the trail. The snow was melting fast!
Osgood Trail up Madison- Mostly bare rock with some ice in between. You could do it in either spikes or bareboot- whichever you feel comfortable doing.
Gulfside and Airline to Adams- we used spikes the entire way. There is still enough ice and snow between rocks in most placed to give good purchase with the spikes, and there as sections of bare rock. |
