An ice fest today, with many sections of trail consisting of thick, solid ice. Especially from about 2200’-3600’ or so in elevation. It snowed lightly at times, and as I made my descent I had to navigate through an inch or two of fresh powder. The new snow completely hid the ice, making for a slow, treacherous hike down.
Microspikes went on after the first mile and came off at the end. I wish I’d had my crampons (strap-on mountaineering style), as the going was slow, not being able to see the ode and then needed to place the feet carefully. Only lost my grip in the ‘spikes twice, both times while holding a small tree. Slid on my behind about a half dozen times in short sections - it was too icy and steep to walk down in just the spikes. Snowshoes went for a ride today. Most hikers in ‘spikes and a few in crampons, no one in ‘shoes.
Socked in summit today, limited views on the way up. |
