Comments
Comments: TRT still had snow almost down to Crystal Cascade.
Above Hermit Lake, very firm snow from the avalanche runout up to the exit gully of Hillman's Highway. Not a problem with crampons and ice axe. Skiers without them started turning back around 50% of the way up, and we saw very few skiers above 75% of the way. There were dozens, maybe even a hundred, on the lower stretches of Hillman's. Never seen so many telemark skiers on Mt W.
Above the exit gully, the upper slopes to the Boott Spur trail were icy. The axe had to be stabbed pretty hard to make a dent in it. Some of our party used it dagger style.
Coming down Boott Spur, a wide mix. Dry trail till treeline, then a mix of fresh snow and monorail. My crampons malfunctioned, so on the steeper ice stretches, I butt-skied with ice axe at the ready for an arrest. The snow/ice ran out 200 feet above the intersection with TRT.
