Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The Thompson Brook and Spruce Brook crossings were easy rock hops. No need to use the snowmobile/bushwhack alternate route.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in good condition except the steeper stretches of the Garfield Trail are eroded over the years leaving a rocky path. This is a high use trail. The trail sign at the junction of Garfield Trail and Garfield Ridge Trail does not indicate the direction to Mt Garfield. I have met at least a couple of people that started in the wrong direction for Mt Garfield. Most hikers coming up the Garfield Trail are heading to Mt Garfield. Most of the tree falls are on the ground or near the ground. One tree fall before reaching Thompson Brook is about 2' above ground on one end. An evergreen is diagonally over the Garfield Trail at about 3,900' with about a 4' clearance at its highest. None of these are hard to get by. Another tree parallels the Garfield Trail with all the limbs cut off allowing for easy passage. Noticed that many of the run-off ditches have been cleaned of debris.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Fine for dogs. Saw one nice dog today.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies are out. I got a couple in my eye before I put on the head net at the summit.

Comments
Comments: Most of the trail is dry surface. There is some mud here and there. The most mud is in the switchback sections at higher elevation on the Garfield Trail. None of the mud is significant.
Not much for wildflowers in bloom.
Great views from the summit ledges.
Many hikers out today including one day Pemi Loopers, multi day Pemi Loopers, one AT thru hiker, and lots of day hikers. Had a nice conversation with a RI couple on the summit. Many Maine hikers on the trail.
