| Comments: |
We put on microspikes half way up the Agonies. Snow was pretty firm in the morning and there were some slick ice on rock.
Above the hut the snow was often over a foot deep and soft so we switched to snowshoes which we stayed with across the ridge until halfway down Lincoln where there was alot of bare rock. Used spikes the rest of the way to Haystack and for a couple hundred yards down Falling Waters where the soft snow on top of ice in the steep sections required more traction. Stayed in snowshoes quite a while then changed to spikes when the soft snow disappeared. In the steep eroded sections of Falling Waters we took off spikes because there is more bare rock than ice...but the remaining ice is quite treacherous. A terrific day for a great walk but it was tiring and slow going with the variable conditions, soft snow, and ice. But you could not ask for a better day!! |
