Got out this morning to bushwhack to the summit of Surry Mountain. I have been eyeing this for a little while now. It is relatively straight forward bushwhack. I came in from the west side parking at Dort Road TH. From there you follow the Surry Mountain Trail (which does not go to the summit) once you go over the bridge you will see a red blazed trail heading straight up a steep climb. you can follow this blazed trail up till it starts to peter out. It is not easy follow so please have navigation skills if doing this hike. It is a bush whack to the summit Surry Mountain. It is not overly difficult due to it being open woods the whole way. I ran into a few old woods roads that I was able to utilize and saw some random flagging tape and blazing on the way up to the summit that made no sense. I had plotted a course on my Coros watch and stuck with it most of the way. It was a great morning to be out before the afternoon storms start to roll through. |
