OK - I was looking for a relatively level 5-mile trail-running loop in the Hooksett area and decided to try my luck (again) in Bear Brook State Park. NOW, Bear Brook has a bad vibe.. maybe it's just its history but even on a sunny day it seems melancholy as it did this day. Anywho, nice parking lot for my low-clearance car just off Podunk Rd. From there I headed up Hall Mountain - this looks like a snowmo trail. I didn't see any viewpoint at the summit. From there you eventually end up at a relatively bald mountain with blueberry bushes and the trail heads across into the woods. Nice up and down trails and eventually you hit a closed trail to the left so you have to take a right onto a new (mountain bike?) trail .65 mi to Hall Mountain Trail again - how do these trails all have the same name? Then you end up at an old kinda creepy campground except there is only a field and some maybe bathrooms. Curve around the field to the right on some pleasant single-track and pass an old steel drum (EEEK - more steel drums at Bear Brook????), and continue through a few more turns back to the car. I would definitely do this loop again - lots of swamps and wonderful singletrack!!!! |
