Passed through gate #357 toward pond. Started shwack just before trail descended towards pond. Mostly open woods with a mix of hobblebush, pencil pines and mossy ferns in the flatter areas. Skirted around a bump to ascend directly toward peak. Blowdowns forced to emerge onto swath and reenter a path to canister which is only 20 ft away on the US side. After D'Urban, we took swath until it intersected with SF1. Took SF1 down towards Boundary Pond then almost entire way to Snag Pond. Saw 1 Canadian couple near viewpoint. Followed sign from SF1 to viewpoint and reentered swath which was a short distance from Snag Pond Peak summit. Canister was directly across a hunters shed. Great views of Canadian peaks near the border. Descended swath where we passed several hunters' posts and open areas containing salt licks. A few US/Canada border markers along the swath. Where the swath turned at a right angle westward away from pond, we bushwhack to pond. The last hundred of feet was the most challenging part of the day because it was a bit overgrown and tight just before popping out at the pond. The only other 2 people we saw were paddling on the pond. Total distance 6 miles, 1800 ft elevation gain, which took us 7.5 hrs total including all breaks. |
