The Bog Dam road is in pretty good shape to the trail parking. There is a sign seeable from York Pond Rd that says Closed but up close it says closed roughly in 11 miles, so it's not an issue taking the eastern loop of Bog Dam Rd to the trailhead. There were a few campers along the road; I thought there would be more and perhaps there will be tonight, but the sign may have scared some off. |

Of course there are few blazes; I don't ever look for them. Today there was a pretty easy herd path to follow. It braids through high grass just after the game camera, but the braids all came back together. The beaver pools of the past few years were gone leaving some soft but still supportive enough mud. I took out a nasty dead fir blowdown but my saw was my small one so I couldn't cut the stem back as far as I would have liked. I tossed a fair amount of debris out of the trail but there's more. The many step over blowdowns are par for the course along with a couple duckunders. The jungle gym double blowdown over a minor drainage is still there, easier to go over than under in my opinion. I suppose it should go, but that will require an axe or a determined person with a good sized saw, but it's almost an old friend by now. |

Most summer trail reports are of the look at me type, but seeing none for Landing Camp this year, I'll post one, as I really like this trail. It's way more enjoyable than the typical eroded and crowded 4K trails. Too bad it isn't closer to home. All the trailheads in Franconia Notch and Appalachia were filled to the brim on my drive up, so for solitude LC was perfect. There's always a little bit of adventure starting out, not knowing how it will be this time, and as always it turns out to be a satisfying if short hike. Today the herd path was easy to follow as it has had some use this summer. I waited for dry conditions (low water table, no recent rain or dew) as it can be a car wash in places. (But much of the nearby Kilkenny Trail is the same.) The beaver pools were gone. It really was easy today. The view on a short side trip using the old Androscoggin Trail north after the end of Landing Camp of the Weeks and Cabot off in the distance isn't spectacular, but it's a nice view and a quiet place to stop, far from the maddening crowds. Not all destinations are peaks, and not all trails should be mindless following of blazes. |
