Lovely fall day for a foliage trip across a local ridge. Need landowner permission to visit these summits!!!! Followed a meandering braided series of trails up to the main summit, cairn and canister. Then hopped into the woods and followed the mostly open woods of the ridge first on the west then mainly east side around the Black (Spruce) knob summit headed north. At times followed a semi overgrown trail including a Narnia bridge ooh!! This started wandering off the east side of the ridge as I approached the north end of the ridge so had to contour west and then the last few hundred yards down to the road were very rough brushy fern thickets. This was tight and slow and I was glad to see the road. Perfect line to the fork to go up the old tower road. Saw a nice 8 point buck on the summit and wandered within 5 feet of the canister multiple times before seeing it on my 3rd wandering lap around the summit cone. Hey, 3rd time is the charm!! Bebopped down and out the old Rooney road and then was hoofing it back up the road when the landowners came to check on me and they gave me a tour around the property at dusk before being dropped off at my car!! Really enjoyable day and lovely people |
