Trails in good condition.
There are blowdowns on both the Rattle River Trail and Kenduskeag Trail. All were easy to go over or under.
Most of the bog plank bridges are in good condition. There are three bridges missing one of the two planks. There are some broken planks. Also, some of the planks flex somewhat when stepped upon.
One of the "Regeneration area" signs near the Rattle River shelter is lying on the ground. |

Most of the trail surfaces are dry. A few places had some mud that was easy to go through. Any seepage on the small ledges presented no difficulties. Lots of leaves on the trail that potentially can hide loose rocks & roots. I did not slip on any leaves.
The first 3 miles of the Rattle River Trail is easy hiking with minimal elevation gain. Thereafter, the trail steepens with many rock steps to facilitate footing and check erosion.
The Kenduskeag Trail has many bog bridges with many that are on a slope that can be tricky when wet or icy. Thankfully, the bog bridges were dry today.
The Rattle River shelter is in good condition. There is an outhouse and tent site near the shelter.
Many hikers going to either Shelburne Moriah or Mt Moriah. One family went to both peaks with the mother completing her 48th of the NH 4K. Her son was at 47/48. There was a religious fanatic on the Kenduskeag Trail who was preaching to passing hikers and playing a horn (Rastafarian?). |
