Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Stony Brook water bars in the upper section especially need work. Several are full, a couple stranded and the trail is eroding. I kick cleaned some, and did a kid's job in trying to get the stranded to work. The trail at either side of the first major crossing aren't really marked, from the worn footpaths it's obvious many people miss it. Otherwise the trail is a mostly a delight. No blowdowns. The signs & post near the peak was broken off but is leaning up on a boulder (I think) so it is functional if a bit off location.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pepper loves this trail, with a niced babbling brook running alongside it down low, and many small drainages higher up. Water not an issue, lots of sippin n dippin spots and an easy footpath. He did need a butt boost going up the peak due to his short legs.
Bugs
Bugs: A few black flies at the parking area.

Comments
Comments: After Thursday's hike of the Wildcats & Carters and given the mild temps, I expected a lot of ice and some soft monorail up high. I even considered snowshoes. But there were only a few scatteried small pieces of ice up high with one short ice bulge, and the only snow (even in the woods) were a pocket off trail up on the ridge and a couple feet deep area just below the peak scramble. A few pockets of mud. Incredible. A summery hike almost entirely.

After seeing the radar and clouds I gave up on the NOAA forecast from last night and switched the hike to Moriah. It was wonderful. Pepper loves this trail so we skipped the winter TH to get more streamside walking. The crossing was easy. We had the trails and peak to ourselves pretty much, seeing one camper up high and then a couple down low on our return leg. No wildflowers to report, and few birds, but the views were nice. Thanks Pepper for a great day.

On seeing the radar and partial sun, the hike was changed to Moriah and it was a good decision.
