Comments
Comments: A FINE day to be in and above Henry's Woods. I wanted to go for a walk today and this was a perfect fit! We departed East Side Trail and Captain Chris, whom turned 65 today (HAPPY BIRTHDAY), set a scintillating pace. We enjoyed virtually no wind and dead calm in the windiest spot in the Pemi - the col between Bond and Bondcliff. Tee shirts on some, shorts on other. Weather was wrong today - in our favor for once! Nothing really of note to Bond summit. The initial drop off Bond to West Bond spur does feature pockets of mostly avoidable ice and snow. It's that time of year again that trail direction determines what melts (north south, slower, east west faster). West bond spur in the col and approaching the summit cone has intermittent pockets of snow and ice that vary in length. The final 100yds to the summit cone was the trickiest of the day and care is definitely needed. We did have spikes but opted to just go slow. Good mostly dry conditions until dropping off the far side of Guyot to Zealand, pockets of mostly avoidable snow, ice and mud rotate. After Zealand spur its just a mix of mud and dry trail with some snow mixed in. Croo at hut was kind enough to let us light a candle (which my flint didn't work, so they lit it for us) and we sang happy birthday to Captain Chris! Six total hikers through the 19.5 mile traverse.
