Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, October 20, 2026
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There were about 6 cars in the lot when I arrived and about the same when I finished. The lot isn't huge but will hold about 15 cars and others can park on the road. No fee to park.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All easy rock hops. With the low temps this morning I checked all the rocks before trusting them in case they were icy. Everything was melted out by the return trip.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Thank you to the maintainers for giving the Frost Trail a nice spiffy haircut. It's so nice to not be attacked and grabbed by trees. The trails are in fine shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This route would be fine for doggos. Sadly, none were spotted today.
Bugs
Bugs: What the heck? There were clouds of bugs all the way along the Gale River trail on my descent. Clouds big enough that I held my breath as I passed through them so I didn't inhale any.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing lost and nothing found.

Comments
Comments: I started the day by finding a tick attached to my back. Clearly my dog is sharing his parasites with me and unlike Sarge, I have not had Frontline applied. Since the doctor isn't open at 5am I went on with life. I accidentally orphaned Galehead when Luke and I did the Twins earlier this month (always double check your spreadsheets...) so I needed to clean this up for 2 projects. The Gale River Trail is LEAFY. So many leaves hiding rocks and mud. Given my current brain issues, I am not moving fast anyway but there is no way I could have moved any faster. It's slippery and the ankle biters are just waiting to pounce. The muddy sections were soupy but better than the leaves. The steep section up to the junction with the Garfield Ridge Trail was good. Those rocks are big enough to stick out above the leaves. The Garfield Ridge trail has fewer leaves but some definite mud. Most of it is pretty avoidable. The doors to the hut were open (the sign at the trailhead says closed) but everything was in boxes and packed up. It's always bittersweet to see the huts close. The Frost trail was muddy but overall the footing was really not bad. I am not breaking any landspeed records right now but I am just happy to be puttering along in the mountains. And now I get to add Doxy to my daily schedule. To quote my PCP, "I don't like the way that bite looks."
