Date of Hike: Monday, April 30, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: No problems with the parking area; fee system is operational.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The 8+ water crossings were moderately difficult, water higher than expected, running faster. There were safe "rock paths", but it took awhile to find them.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Many parts of the Downes Brook trail are in need of maintenance, with blowdowns, significant erosion and poor trail markings, especially at the water crossings. Kate Sleeper Trail was in better shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We took Tucker, a 5-year golden retriever. There was only one area where he had difficulty climbing up roots/eroded area of the trail and needed a boost. A small dog might have had difficulty with the water crossings. Tucker slipped off some of the rocks and into the water.
Bugs
Bugs: The bugs were out, especially in the parking area, lower parts of the Downes Brook Trail.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: We found a pair of homemade snowshoes, fashioned out of limbs/pine branches. Amazing!

Comments
Comments: We were surprised at the amount of snow in the upper part of the Downes Brook trail - it was solid ice/packed snow on the way up, but softening and collapsing as the day progressed.
