Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Peaks South Moat Mountain, Middle Moat Mountain, North Moat Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Moat Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 21, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Fee system is in place at Diana's Baths, but not at the "new trailhead" parking off Dugaway. There is a sign at the old parking area telling you that the new area is located 0.5miles to the west. Plenty of space for cars in both areas.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Not many - no issues.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail up to South and Middle is in great shape. The trail between Middle and North is overgrown with many blowdowns (but nothing difficult to navigate). The trail down from North was hard to find - no markings until well down the ledges, then there was a bright yellow blaize; by then you could also see the cut in the forest. Another blaize/cairn closer to the summit would be a great addition. Beyond Diana's Baths, the trail is like walking on a sidewalk. Bridges over small streams, etc.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We had Tucker with us - a sturdy golden lab. She needed a big boost in 3 places going up to North peak. A lesser dog would probably need even more help on parts of this trail.
Bugs
Bugs: HORRIFIC! EVERYWHERE! Starting in the parking area and moving up to the summits. Especially tough in the forest areas. First hike, where we all left with an incredible number of bites, despite bug spray applied repeatedly. Definitely, the worst part of the hike.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: We found a "black tape - plastic jar" with a registration log in it. We didn't bother signing it; we knew we had been there.

Comments
Comments: We had great weather, a little on the warm side, and incredible views. If it weren't for the bugs, we would have lingered longer on some of the summits. Another great day on "52 with a View". This was our first time for the Moats, but it is definitely a hike worth doing again.
