Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Lucy Brook crossing on Red Ridge Trail made by jumping from rock to rock just upstream from trail crossing. Lucy Brook crossing on Moat Mountain trail on small rocks some just under water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The lower sections of both the Moat Mountain Trail and the Red Ridge Trail were very wet with lots of mud, standing pools of water, and running water. There were no bog bridges on the trails. Blazing was scarce in many sections of trail. Some of the blazes were weather worn as they were badly faded. There are no cairns on the open ledges on Red Ridge Trail. Spruce and fir boughs crowding the Moat Mountain Trail in some stretches between Red Ridge and North Moat.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were biting at lower elevations. Black flies were swarming on the open ledges and summit. Spotted a Hummingbird Clearwing feasting on nectar of the bog laurel on the ledges of Red Ridge Trail. At first I thought it was a miniature Hummingbird but then I saw antennae. Had to check out the insect on the Internet.

Comments
Comments: The Moat Mountain Trail and Red Ridge Trail make a fine loop trip to North Moat Mountain. It should be nice later in the season when there is drier conditions and less insects. If I do it again I will ascend via Moat Mountain Trail and descend on the Red Ridge Trail (today I hiked the loop clockwise). The ledges may be tricky on a wet day. Nice views from the ledges and open summit. Head toward Carter Notch direction to descend from North Moat summit via the Moat Mountain Trail.
