Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at Great Gulf at 8:30am. We recieved a written warning for not having the parking pass stuck to the windshield. No fine though.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All were easily hopped. The lower of the numerous crossings before reaching the headwall of Madison Gulf almost steered us the wrong way. The trail goes up and across. The crossing at the bottom of the Buttress Tr is on the right near a campsite sign.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trails were in good shape over all. There were the usual large blowdowns found in a wilderness area but almost all of them have been limbed up and were easy to navigate. Most of the Buttress Tr was very brushy.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This was a very strenous hike for Marlie and Brewer. I would not reccommend it for most dogs. On Madison Gulf they needed a little direction and a small boost. The miles of rock hopping began to take their toll later in the day. Buttress Tr was tough on the descent due to the large boulders along the upper half. Brewer may have been mistaken for a pit bull (he's a boxer/german shepherd) due to his bad manners. He and his owner appologize.
Bugs
Bugs: Only on Adams' summit and along the scrub on the Buttress Tr. Annoying but manageable.

Comments
Comments: Great weather for this less than straight forward approach. Madison Gulf Tr was not as dificult as the AMC guide makes it sound, IMO. There were some small scrambles but it is almost completely in the trees and dry. Buttress Tr, although the map makes it look moderate, has very rough footing and lots of boulder hopping. We were much slower today than expected and made it out of the woods at 8:20pm, Just after dark.
