Parking/Access Road Notes: No vehicles in the pullout on the east side of 302, just up from the trailhead. One other vehicle on my return.

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The one major crossing is easily hopped at current water levels.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in good shape from top to bottom, with one or two minor muddy patches, and a couple small eroded areas on the steepest switchbacks. There were several stepover blowdowns (looked old) on the lower portion of the trail before the stream crossing, one lean over that's currently a walk under, will probably become problematic in the winter. Several other old blowdowns above the crossing, all easily gotten over or around. Blazing down low (at least on the way up) consisted of faded blue blazes, and as the trail climbs away from the stream before the crossing, the blazes switch to yellow, interspersed with old blue blazes. No issues following the trail, and double blazing was helpful at a couple key turns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Minor until the summit, then a group of black flies descended. They weren't landing/biting, but they buzzed around the whole time I was on top. More annoying than anything else.

Comments
Comments: With limited time, this hike seemed to fit the bill perfectly. What I did not anticipate, was the strenuous nature of this seemingly short hike. The trail starts out easily enough, climbing gradually along the brook, with several nice cascades along the way. Once the trail bears right away from the brook, it steepens up significantly, though the footbed is still soft with minimal rocks and roots. Once you drop down to cross the brook, the fun begins in earnest on the other side. Having only ever hiked in New England, switchbacks are something we don't see much of. These switchbacks (I'm sure) do a lot to decrease the grade of the climb, but are still very steep in spots. A couple ledgy spots were slick when I reached them, but were drying out on my return.

The summit was fantastic, offering views from Chocorua to Carrigain, though my stay was limited due to some annoying black flies. The trip down was without incident, and I treated myself to a float in the river next to the parking area... cold, but soooo worth it. Start time of 8:50, end time of 12:20. Definitely a peak worth repeating!
