Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for two at Austin Brook trail sign, with room for a few more in a small lot across the road. There was room for a few cars at a turn off near Gates Brook Rd. There were 4 cars incluidng my own on my return to the car.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Austin Brook a careful rock hop. The few others were basically just step overs.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Two blowdowns on Blue; otherwise trails clear. Trails were easy to follow for the most part excepting Wiggin where only the spur up to the rock was painted, but in the Yellow & Red Trails area coming down the intersections could use more obvious signage. Going up Red sign is easily visible and momentum takes one through the 4 way. I probably hiked on more forest duff today than I have on any other hikes for many years. It was great.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy day for Pepper with a soft footpath, often nearly flat or only modest slopes, comfy temps,a few sip n dips and some impudent rodents to chase. Great day.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found but left in place one small stuffed tiger patterned teddy bear that appeared to have been carefully placed to sit under a tree that had a sheltered cavity at its base.

Comments
Comments: My 28th ed WMC maps didn't show some of the trails in Rocket's redline spreadsheet so I dug out a 22nd ed. map to take with me, but I mostly had to rely on whatever I found on the ground. I hadn't planned on doing this hike but after a late start it seemed to fit the weather, a mix of drizzle and light rain on my drive up. I think it drizzled most of the day, but modern synthetics stayed pretty much dry just from the heat given off by steady hiking. Only my boots and summer gaiters got wet. I had no views due to the clouds but it appeared to me that the trail to Ingalls deserves a nice day, since there appeared to be lots of nice viewpoints along it and on top. By the time I got to Crag I oculd at least see the valley below and colors are near peak. We went up Austin Brook to Yellow to Scudder to Ingalls and back, to Blue then Wiggins and Red, back down to Yellow to Crag and then over to Gates. I should have gone up Middle Mtn but wasn't sure about it and I had planned to get Gates. I started out thinking all we'd get today was some nice exercise and contrast value, along with some rain, but it turned out to be a really nice hike and we were comfy all day.
