My objective of the day was to hike Mt. Bemis via the Nancy Pond trail to the abandoned Mt. Bemis Trail. I started my ascent at 8:30 AM and quickly made my way 1.7 miles to the Nancy Brook stream crossing and slightly overgrown Mt. Bemis Trailhead. The Mt. Bemis trailhead is directly after the stream crossing and to the right. There is a geocache called the Mt. Bemis trail at the trailhead and precise GPS coordinates can be found on Geocaching.com (search for GC1V5BQ).
The abandoned trail is well used and easily defined until the summit ridge where the spruce get much thicker. The trail proceeds through an open area which presents incredible panoramic views and the best of the trip. You'll eventually reach the tattered remains of the old fire tower. The true summit is a few hundred yards West and the most challenging bushwhack of this journey.
Returned to the car at exactly 12:30. |
