Comments
Comments: Traverse from Gentian Pond to Carlo Col.

Started at end of driveable portion of right fork of logging road to the south of Success Outlook. Okay walking at first, then a little brushy on a herd path marked with some cairns. Lost herd path as I approached the cliffs of North Baldcap. I suspect the herd path may have continued into the mature stand of hardwoods at the face of the cliffs. I continued up a moose path for awhile, then found myself in hobble bush and prickers three to four feet talk for awhile. Eventually worked my way up to the bump immediately north of Gentian Pond (rejoined the herd path, approaching from a logging cut from the south, just before reaching the AT boundary swath prior to the bump...but petered out at treeline prior to the swath). Logging cut is maybe within 100 yards of the AT in one place (trail hugs close to the boundary).

Slippery ledge with wet leaves from there down to the pond. Reroute prior to Austin Brook Trail was a little mucky.

Nice woods from previously mentioned bump to col south of Success. Steep climb in places up to success, with some wet ledges that were tricky to get up. Also plenty of muddy areas.

Slippery ledge north of Success, as well as some more mud.

Upper Carlo Col Trail was as bad as I remember it - essentially a muddy brook bed for awhile. Middle portion was relocated recently and has undergone some Level 2 work (stairs, drainage). Still pretty muddy in places, but never goes out to the clearcuts.

Foliage in the lower elevations around Success was spectacular. Lots of hunters out and about, as well as assorted gunshots heard - glad I brought my blaze orange with me!
