Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The Unknown Pond trailhead parking lot was full when I arrived at 8:45AM. Luckily there was room at the York Pond trailhead. Managed to get past the Berlin Fish Hatchery gate before 4:00PM although I have experienced no problems in the past when I left after 4:00PM.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All brooks crossable on rocks although some were submerged and some slippery from wet leaves
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of mud and some standing water from recent rains. All bog bridges were either broken or rotting. Some fallen trees across the Kilkenny Ridge Trail which presented no real problems. Some light brushing required in short sections of the spur to The Horn. The view sign for Bunnell Rock is chewed up and worn. The York Pond Trail continuation beyond the point where Bunnell Notch Trail diverges is indistinct and could be easily missed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Plenty of water for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found:

Comments
Comments: There was a lot of water and mud on all the trails. The large puddles could be skirted or crossed on rocks.

Many other hikers on the trail today. Many had camped at Unknown Pond. One woman from Cumberland ME was completing her 48 on Mt Cabot today. Another hiker from Jamaica Plain MA planned to complete his 48 on Columbus Day on Mt Eisenhower and Mt Monroe.

Many trees barren of leaves although the forest floor was covered in colorful leaves.

The 0.6 mile round trip to The Horn is well worth the small additional effort as the view is spectacular.
