Parking/Access Road Notes: parked at the AT lot near Falls Village, intersection of route 7 and route 112, plenty of parking on a weekday
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Guinea Brook crossing between Breadloaf Mountain and route 4 was running knee deep with strong current - a sign recommended bypassing this crossing by following local roads, but a downed tree a few hundred feet up river was easy enough to walk to a point where you could rock hop without getting your feet wet ... trail conditions seemed very dry, with smaller (bone dry) brook beds looking like they usually have water running ... consider cameling up water to your basecamps unless this area gets rain soon ?
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: most of the AT was well maintained, and i met a lead trail crew member working on stone steps near Breadloaf
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: black flies were buzzing, not yet biting, but were a nuisance ... mid spring, time to pack bug dope and a headnet ! spotted a blister beetle (a large iridescent blue beetle; larger than a wine cork, smaller than a breadbox), lots of fuzzy bees doing their thing, and a handful of millipedes (some were crawling inside the lean-to, bring your tent !

Comments
Comments: backpacked the southern 34 miles of the Appalachian Trail in CT, between april 28-29 ... trail was very dry, with smaller streambeds dryer than my sense of humour ... campsites near brooks had reliable water running through them ...

i had planned to complete this 34-mile CT AT section over a relaxing 3 days, but rainy forecast the second night led me to push and complete it in two days ... Stewart Hollow Brook lean-to site was nice, sleeping within earshot of Housatonic River, midway along my trek ... most "shelter" sites along this stretch have bear boxes to store your treats ...

i started southbound not sure how i'd return to my vehicle - intraweb research showed local uber options but rumour had it they might not be reliable, with limited cell reception ... met an AT section hiker along the route who suggested a local Trail Angel named Christine who helps hikers with shuttle rides along the AT in CT ... called her from the top of Ten Mile Hill, and she picked me up at the AT hiker lot at 9 Hoyt Road, Sherman CT an hour later ... 860-488-1015, super kind, great resource for section hiking in this area ... could be others on whiteblaze.net but it wasn't easy to find shuttle providers ?
